Why beer?

Richard is the President of the European Parliamentary Beer Club, which along with its Westminster equivalent, listens to the views of breweries, publicans and consumer organisations such as CAMRA to ensure that European laws and legislation take account of their needs.

European Beer Consumers Union

The European Beer Consumers Union was founded in 1990 to represent the views and interests of beer consumers across Europe. You can find out more by clicking the link above or by reading their manifesto below.

The European Beer Consumers Objectives are:

  • The promotion of Europe's beer culture
  • The promotion of traditional beer styles
  • The promotion of diversity and consumer choice
  • To enhance the image of beer in Europe
  • To represent the interests of consumers

The European Beer Consumers Union Priorities are:

Competition and choice in the European beer market

  • To fight mergers that undermine fair competition and consumer choice
  • To campaign to prevent market abuses by dominant brewers
  • To support small brewers in their attempts to gain access to the market
  • To campaign to ensure the recycling and reuse schemes do not disadvantage the consumber by restricting choice and access to market for small brewers
  • To preserve traditional beer styles

Taxation

  • To fight excise distortions in the single market
  • To support the adoption of a reduced rate of excise for small brewers

Empowering the consumer

  • To promote ingredients listing for beer in Europe
  • To campaign for effective legislation to ensure consumer's receive full beer measures
  • To support initiatives which encourage the moderate responsible consumption of beer
