Sir,

David Cook asks me to clarify what expenses I receive for my work as an MEP (1 August). I am more than happy to do so.

The expenses received by MEPs are broadly equivalent to those received by MPs. There are a few differences in the system: for instance, MPs have all their computers and postage for free while MEPs get an allowance. But, by and large, these differences balance out. I have posted a full comparison on my website for those who are interested in the details.

One exception is a loophole that we have just voted to close. Currently, like MPs' car travel, MEPs' travel to Parliament is currently refunded at a flat economy rate, regardless of the actual cost of the ticket. However, Labour MEPs have recently won their fight to reform the system so that refunds are paid on the basis of cost alone. This will take effect in the next Parliament.

Finally, all Labour MEPs have their accounts examined and certified by independent auditors, putting us beyond reproach.
