Sir,
I see that N Brown (12 August) has swallowed lock stock and barrel the newspaper
story that a proposal for EU legislation would have required barmaids to
cover up their cleavages in order to avoid getting sunstroke while
collecting glasses outside.
I am sure that most readers will have grasped the fact that there is no
such proposal, just as there is no truth in the story that the EU has
legislated to require all bananas to be straight or strawberries to be
cubic.
Such stories are sometimes amusing, but they are pure inventions to try
to make the EU look silly or sinister. And if ever the EU Commission were to
make such proposals, they would soon be weeded out by our MEPs in the
European Parliament.
