Sir,

It is curious to read the Australian and South African Ambassadors to the EU propose to exempt naturally occurring minerals and metals from the proposed EU risk assessment scheme (letters, 13 Sept).

Under their logic, asbestos would still be in widespread use, causing death to thousands and misery to millions.
