Dear Editor,

I was disappointed to see, in a recent national tabloid, the latest Euromyth to be circulated – that the European Parliament is renaming “Bombay Mix” in order to avoid causing offence to the Mumbai population.  The irony of the whole story was its placement under the heading “You couldn't make it up”, something which the relevant journalists managed to do with considerable ease! The truth is, the story was fabricated by a press agency and published by two tabloids despite its complete lack of credibility.

What is even more frustrating than Euromyths (the straightening of bananas, the taking over of football, the renaming of Trafalgar Square to name but a few) being reported, is just how many people are willing to believe them.

Jack Kinsman (letters, July 28th) expresses sincere anger at the “Bombay Mix” reports.  All I can suggest to YP readers is that if you read something this silly, it is not going to be true.  If only people did not always assume the worst of our elected representatives!
