Dear Editor, Paul Potter (letters, 3rd March) claims that MEPs, such as myself, can decide "how we, in this land, should run our own country". Not true! Matters that are purely internal to Britain are a matter for the House of Commons and our own Government. Where MEPs are responsible are in the limited number of areas which relate to the whole of Europe such as common rules for the common market, environmental standards and so on - matters where no country can effectively work in isolation but where, with our neighbouring countries in the European Union we can do more. Mr Potter points out that Britain has only a share of the MEPs. True, just as Lincolnshire does not have all the MPs in the House of Commons. Why on earth Mr Potter imagines that all members of the European Parliament should be British is beyond me! Yours, Richard Corbett Labour MEP for Yorkshire & Humber |
