Dear Editor,

You are right to say (leader, 23 February) that "it is imperative that a rigorous set of rules are in place that compel MEPs to provide receipts for all expenses that their incur, including the salaries of their staff."

Labour MEPs have had just such a set of rules for nearly a decade, requiring each and every one of us to have such receipts reviewed by an independent professional auditor every year to verify that all expenditure is proper and within the rules.

Why don't all other parties do the same?
