letter to the editor from Richard Corbett MEP

13th March 2008

Daily Telegraph

Dear Editor,

Bill Cash's amendment, which would have effectively allowed the British parliament to simply override any EU legislation we signed up to (letters, March 10), is completely illogical. What would be the point of our, or indeed any country's, government and MEPs agreeing legislation at a European level if they can then ignore it in their own country?

Take the topical example of migrating birds. The EU has agreed common rules to protect birds migrating from our part of Europe to Africa, by banning hunting during the migration season. This will only work if every country sticks to the agreed rules. It makes no sense if Malta then adopts national law allowing for the massive slaughter of these birds, negating the conservation efforts of the rest of Europe, and contradicting the EU legislation they signed up to.

When we and our neighbours use the EU to elaborate common rules, the least you would expect is that everyone respects them afterwards.

Yours,

Richard Corbett
