Dear Editor, GL Robinson (letters, 29th March) is being misleading when he claims that the European Parliament will not respect the result of the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. The amendment that he refers to was rejected for two reasons: 1) it goes without saying that the Lisbon Treaty can only come info force if it is ratified by every country in the EU and 2) it was inappropriate to specifically refer to Ireland only, as every country's decision must be respected, not just Ireland's. The bottom line is that, as G L Robinson knows, if a single country votes against it, then the Lisbon Treaty will fall, even if the overwhelming majority supports it. Yours, Richard Corbett Labour MEP for Yorkshire & Humber
