MEP praises seal campaigners

Yorkshire and Humber MEP Richard Corbett has thanked the hundreds of constituents who have contacted him with their concerns about the import and export of harp and hooded seal products in the European Union.

The vast majority of the seal products are imported from Canada, where up to one and a half million seal pups have been slaughtered in the past four years, many skinned while they were still alive.

European Parliament Declaration 38, which Richard has signed, calls for a ban on the import, export and sale of all harp and hooded seal products across the European Union.

Richard said: "I'm very grateful to all of my constituents in Yorkshire and the Humber who have taken the time to contact me about banning seal products in the European Union.

"As a member of the All Party Animal Welfare inter-group in the European Parliament, I am pleased to say I have signed Written Declaration 38. A ban would be a huge step forward in the protection of these threatened species.

"We are endeavouring to respond to each constituent individually but the sheer weight of correspondence means this will take some time. It is brilliant to see so many people actively engaging with politics and realising that they can make their voice heard in the EU." /ends
