Yorkshire MEP joins campaign against bullfighting |
|||
|
Yorkshire and Humber MEP Richard Corbett has joined a campaign in the European Parliament in support of a ban on bullfighting. The Written Declaration, tabled by Richard's Labour colleague Robert Evans MEP, declares that bullfighting runs contrary to the European Union's Animal Welfare Action Plan, which puts the EU at the forefront of improving global animal welfare. Richard, deputy leader of the Labour MEPs said: "The EU is determined to be the world leader in animal welfare, and as a member of the Parliament's Animal Welfare Intergroup there has long been concern about bullfighting. While the EU does not have the power to ban bullfighting this campaign gives Parliament the opportunity to voice its disapproval of the practice and to urge Spain to take measures against it." The declaration and the Animal Welfare Action Plan wants to ensure that EU farm subsidies can no longer be given to farmers for breeding bulls to be used in bullfighting. Richard added: "Bullfighting is responsible for the deaths of 40,000 bulls each year and it is utterly absurd that the EU is helping to fund an activity that is so contradictory to all of its other achievements in improving the welfare of animals." |
