Corbett denounces Cameron's 'gutter politics' |
|||
|
Labour's European spokesperson on the Reform Treaty, Richard Corbett MEP, today denounced David Cameron's article in this morning's press as "gutter politics at its worst". Richard, who is Deputy Leader of the Labour MEPs, said: "Cameron's piece in this morning's press really plumbed the depths. Rather than focus on the facts of the Reform Treaty, he trotted out a rag-bag of clichés and blatant untruths. "In particular, his claim that the Reform Treaty would 'transfer power from our elected Parliament to the EU's unelected bureaucrats' is a flat out lie. In fact, the opposite is the case. The Reform Treaty specifically increases the powers of elected parliaments not bureaucrats by increasing the role of national parliaments and the European Parliament. It strictly limits EU action to the policy areas agreed by Member States in the treaties. Mr Cameron has either not read the treaty or has no understanding of its contents. "Coming straight after William Hague's lie that the treaty would remove Britain from the UN Security Council, it shows that that the Tories' cynicism knows no bounds." Referring to Cameron's charge of "shameless arrogance" against Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Richard retorted: "The reality is that it is Cameron who is displaying shameless arrogance by telling lies to the British people. His tactics and arguments against the Reform Treaty are examples of gutter politics at its worst.” ENDS |
