Corbett: Parliament should decide |
|||
| Richard Corbett MEP, the Labour spokesman on Constitutional Affairs in the European Parliament, has today reacted to the Commons European Scrutiny Committee's report on the proposed Reform Treaty. Richard said: “The Commons Committee report says the issue of whether the treaty is ‘constitutional' or not matters less than the actual content of the treaty. This is true, but it is precisely the notion of the previous treaty being a ‘constitution' which gave rise to calls for a referendum. “Crucially this feature has now disappeared and therefore there is no reason to abandon the method of Parliamentary scrutiny. After all, Britain has never ever had a referendum to ratify an international treaty.” //ENDS |
