New treaty hailed by Richard

Labour's spokesman on Constitutional Affairs in the European Parliament, Richard Corbett, has hailed the Lisbon Treaty for the new levels of accountability it will bring to the EU.

Richard said: “In Britain many of the benefits of the treaty have been lost in Eurosceptic hysteria but what people should realise is just how much it improves the EU's democratic accountability.

“The new treaty means that each piece of EU legislation will require, first, examination by national parliaments, second, approval by the EU Council of Ministers (composed of national ministers from national governments accountable to those national parliaments), and third,  approval by the European Parliament, which is composed of directly elected MEPs. For an international organisation this is an unparalleled level of scrutiny and accountability."

He added: "Now the reforms have been agreed we can get back to providing the Europe of results.” //ENDS
