Review accounts of all politicans, says Labour MEP

All MPs and MEPs should follow the example of Labour's MEPs in the European Parliament by having all their accounts approved by independent auditors, according to Yorkshire & Humber MEP Richard Corbett.

Recent revelations of misappropriated expenses in the House of Commons have been followed by claims that some MEPs are responsible for similar expense fraud in the European Parliament.

Richard said: “All politicians must be beyond reproach when it comes to their accounts and the series of revelations about fiddled expenses is completely and utterly unacceptable. The European Parliament's report is long overdue and all MEPs should now follow Labour's example by having all their office and staff expenditure reviewed by an independent auditor.

“The public needs to know that their taxes are being spent legitimately which is why Labour in the European Parliament supported maximum transparency by introducing this measure in 2000. There is no reason why all MEPs, and indeed MPs, should not be doing this.”
