EU treaty debate comes to Leeds

The University of Leeds is hosting an open debate on the much-discussed Lisbon Treaty, which will be addressed by local Euro MP Richard Corbett.

The discussion, which takes place in the University's Roger Stevens Lecture Theatre 25,  is a timely one and coincides with the House of Commons debate on the Lisbon Treaty which has raged over the past few weeks.

Richard said: “The issue of Europe is back in the spotlight thanks to the Lisbon Treaty but there has been little debate about its actual contents. Friday's debate will give people the chance to investigate what the treaty, if it is adopted, will actually do and whether or not it's a good thing.

“There's been an awful lot said about the EU but few people have concentrated on how the treaty would make the EU more accountable or more efficient and will help the significantly enlarged EU to keep running effectively.”

He added: “I look forward to answering anyone's questions on the treaty and hope the event can play a small part in increasing people's knowledge of the EU.”
