Irish 'No' is not the end of the Lisbon Treaty

Socialist Group spokesman on Constitutional Affairs, Richard Corbett today said that the Irish No vote was a "blow" but not the end of discussion on the Lisbon Treaty.

Commenting after the announcement of the results, Richard said: "Ireland has said "No", but there are 26 other Member States, the majority of which have already ratified the Treaty, whose opinion matters too.

"The democratic result of one country is in conflict with the democratic results of the others. Allowing one single country to derail a treaty that has been approved by the majority of European countries would be as undemocratic as seeking to ignore the Irish result. The only solution is a compromise, however difficult that is.

"It is inconceivable that all of the others will simply say 'too bad - one country has said No to the package as it stands, so let's forget reform and stick with the current system for evermore.'

"All EU countries want to reform the EU, and even the Irish No campaigners have said that they want to negotiate a better package. Ireland must have a profound internal debate and tell the rest of Europe what their problems are. We can then try to meet their concerns.

"The Irish 'No' vote is not a catastrophe. Rather, it is a blow to those who want the EU's institutions to work more effectively and democratically. The real catastrophe would be to end discussion on the treaty and sweep under the carpet necessary reforms that will deliver an EU that is fit for purpose"
