Bribe verdict leads to new demand for inquiry in to Leeds-Milan final
Yorkshire & Humber MEP Richard Corbett is once again demanding UEFA investigate the 1973 Cup Winners' Cup final between Leeds United and AC Milan following the news that a British lawyer has been found guilty of accepting a bribe from the Italian Prime Minister and Milan club owner Silvio Berlusconi.

Leeds lost the final to Milan 1-0 but the referee's performance in the match was so suspect he was later banned for life. Uefa say their own regulations forbid them to investigate a match played more than 20 years ago.

Richard said: "That fact David Mills has been found guilty of receiving a bribe from Berlusconi, the owner of Milan, suggests that bribery is endemic at the club from the very top down.

"Milan have been involved in several bribery cases and Berlusconi has of course engineered immunity to protect himself from prosecution on other bribery charges. This sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable in any part of society.

"Uefa can take a really bold step against bribery by stripping clubs of silverware if there is evidence they have won it by match-fixing even if the games took place over 30 years ago. Few doubt that Leeds were cheated out of the Cup Winners' Cup back in 1973 and I believe there is enough evidence to mount a proper investigation into the game."
