Wherever we may roam

MEPs in the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly today to scrap mobile phone roaming charges across Europe.

Assuming this decision is confirmed by elected governments when they meet in the EU council, from December next year it will cost no more to make or receive a call, send a text or use mobile data when abroad than it will at home.

Labour MEPs were one of the biggest advocates of the new rules, and in the end the only British party to vote against the measure was (surprise!) UKIP.

Once again — just as it did with cheap flights, clean beaches and passport-free travel — the European Union has quietly and without fuss improved the lives of the millions of ordinary people who travel around our single market every year. Stuff that in your cigar and smoke it, Mr Farage.
